late from last night

Sometimes it feels like nurses like to give conflicting information.. Two nights ago I was told they like to keep the PIC line in until right before they go home, in case something comes up. I go back yesterday and they had the PIC line out. Whatever. I take it as a sign that they don't expect anything unexpected..

So there's that, and Prince A's nurse last night said that to go home, basically they are looking for him to go 24 hours without having any tube feedings. Which sounds good, except he's having trouble staying awake to actually make use of bottle or breastfeedings.

I was really frustrated by his sleepiness last night because I couldn't rouse him even a little bit. He latched on once and ate a whopping 3ccs. I left Prince A with Jason in the breastfeeding room and went to go see if his nurse knew if he ever had any actual awake times. It really didn't seem normal for him to be sleeping so heavily every single time I came up. She hadn't had him before, so she didn't have any of her own experiences with him, but she said his chart looked like he seemed to be fairly awake during the mornings. She said it was possible that with him being so little, he could be getting worn out from trying to nurse or bottlefeed at every meal. She suggested that he be given a rest (fed through the tube) like the meal before I plan to come breastfeed him, to see if it will help him be more awake to breastfeed.

I went back to the breastfeeding room with intentions of trying again, but ended up taking a few more pictures of Jason and Prince A. While Jason was holding him, his blood oxygen level was dropping below the level they want it out, so we freaked out and called the desk and had our nurse sent to us. She and another nurse came, and said since Prince A was a good color, it was probably that he just wasn't breathing very deeply, which could also be from being really tired. So we took him back to his bed and let him have the rest of his meal through the tube. I told the nurse we're supposed to be up there at 10 for our baby CPR class and would be able to breastfeed Prince A at 11, and we agreed to have Prince A on tube feedings through the night (unless he had an awake period, when he would get a bottle) to see if it will help him any when I come in to feed him.

My cold is getting worse and moving down into my chest. I hate this time of year; I always get sick. Stupid weather. I'm going to have to move myself to sleeping up right on the couch unless this gets better real quick.
